Hockey India President communicated to Indian Olympic association for not sending Men’s Hockey team to Commonwealth Games. There are few reasons behind the decision with one being related to tough quarantine rules applicable on arrival at England from India. Also, it has mentioned that England is highly affected with Covid-19 and HI doesn’t want to risk team before Asiad.
CWG scheduled from Jul 28- Aug 8 2022, while Asiad will be starting from 10th September. Winning gold in continental competition like Asiad, will provide India direct qualification to 2024 Olympics.
India had never won Gold at CWG, came close twice when finished 2nd in 2010 (New Delhi) and 2014 (Glasgow) after losing heavily in Finals against Australia.
In a way, this decision of not sending team, is a complete turnaround in the Indian Hockey. There was a time when it was heavily reported about the downfall of Hockey in India, when India could not qualify for CWG at 2002. It was not completely issue with Indian Hockey then also. There was rule to get at least one team to participate from all continents and India end up not being part; since Pakistan was better performer in Asia at that moment. Now, it seems that time has changed as per Hockey condition in India, with this time India voluntarily deciding to not to go for CWG.
